Public Service Announcement

How can I persuade others to make a positive change in their life?

A Public Service Announcement, or PSA, is a 30 to 60 second video. Its goal is to persuade an audience to take a specific action or adopt a particular viewpoint on a cause or social issue.

Public Service Announcements are:

Persuasive

  • Argues one clear point of view
  • Makes you want to do (or not do) something

Entertaining

  • Engages the audience with a variety of media, such as narration, text, interviews, photographs, dramatizations, or music
  • Holds your interest

Based on facts

  • Uses and cites data from reliable sources

  • Does not rely on rumors or unsupported opinions

Has a clear and realistic message

  • Something that you can immediately go out and do or take a stand on

Uses concise language

  • Gets to the point in 30 to 60 seconds

Your task is to choose an issue and create a Public Service Announcement that persuades an audience to make a positive change in their lives.

=Steps Of The Process!=

STEP ONE – Your Task (What needs to be done?)

You will need the Steps of the Process Packet and the KWLH.
Read the scenario discribed in Step One. Choose an issue and create a Public Service Announcement that persuades an audience to make a positive change in their lives.
Think about....What issue will I be investigating?
  • What do you already know about your project?
  • What do you wonder about?
Complete the Know and Wonder sections for Step One. The question you and your group come up with will guide your research.

STEP TWO – Information Seeking Strategies (What will I use to locate the information I need?)

Brainstorm to determine the range of resources-
What resources will you use to find the needed / best information to answer your questions?
Make a list of all possible resources for Step Two on your "Getting It Done!" sheet.

STEP THREE – Location & Access of Information (Where can I find the information I need?)
Make a list of words (keywords or search words) that will help you find Information. Keywords are like synonyms and related words to your topic. List the keywords in the table on your "Getting it Done!" sheet.

How will you locate information in your resources?
  • Books -- look at the index (usually in back of book) and/or table of contents (front of book) for your topic and keywords.
  • Encyclopedias -- look at the index volume for topic and keywords.
  • Online Databases -- type either your topic or keywords in the search box.
  • Use Teacher Project links carefully, fully exploring each link that is offered.
  • Search Engines -- use same strategy as online databases -- see if keywords in quotes narrow your search results.

STEP FOUR – Collection of Information (Read, Listen, View!) Engage the source (read, listen, view)
You may not need to read, listen, or view ALL material in each book, article, or website. Remember you are looking for specific information you need to answer your questions.

Take out the relevant information from a source
Once you have found information about your topic you need to collect the information. This means – recording the words and phrases, in your own words, which answer your questions. Merely COPYING is NOT taking relevant information from a source.

For this project you will choose how to organize the information you collect.
  • note or index cards.
  • notes on a sheet of paper.
  • Inspiration web
As you collect information, be sure to cite your sources!

STEP FIVE – Synthesis / “Think About” (What can I create to show my knowledge to others?)
  • Organize your information from multiple sources
· Create a graphic organizer
Ask yourself these questions: Have I have organized this information so that it makes sense to me and others? Do I have enough information?
Present the informationFor this project you will create a PSA using Windows MovieMaker Live.
So.....what is a public service announcement? Watch the examples in the student share drive and complete this activity sheet.
What will you include in your PSA? Look at the Rubric.

Before you can create your PSA you must plan it using a storyboard. Use the information you collected to create your storyboard. Once your storyboard is approved you may begin creating your PSA.

STEP SIX – Evaluation – (How well did I do the job?)Think about the processes of locating, collecting, organizing and sharing information. Respond to the prompts in Step 6.
Check your project checklist to make sure you have completed all the steps.
Compare your completed Public Service Announcement and the rubric. Complete step six of Getting It Done!
